How Much Water do we Need to Drink?

Our bodies are estimated to be about 60 to 70% water. Blood is mostly water, and our muscles, lungs, and brain all contain a lot of water. We need to drink water because water is needed to regulate body temperature and to provide the means for nutrients to travel to all our organs. Water also transports oxygen to our cells, removes waste, and protects our joints and organs.

A good estimate is to take your body weight in pounds and divide that number in half. That gives you the number of ounces of water per day that you need to drink. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, you should drink at least 80 ounces of water per day. If you exercise you should drink another 8 ounce glass of water for every 20 minutes you are active. If you drink coffee or alcohol, you should drink at least an equal amount of water. When you are traveling on an airplane, it is good to drink 8 ounces of water for every hour you are on board the plane. If you live in an arid climate, you should add another 2 servings per day. As you can see, your daily need for water can add up to quite a lot.

The best source of water is plain, pure drinking water. Sodas have a lot of sugar in them and aren't a good source, so if you drink them, they don't count towards your daily amount. Herbal teas that aren't diuretic are fine. Sports drinks contain electrolytes and may be beneficial, just look out for added sugar and calories that you don't need.

The Celebration of Lenten Season

Lenten season or Holy Week season is a time for reflection. It's the holiest of holidays - a time to rest, reflect, and pray. Churches all over had crowds that eagerly participated in the religious activities like processions, lenten retreats and recollections. My neighbors, to their credit, were abnormally quiet. Frolicking and playing in the neighborhood were at peace during Holy Week season, especially on Good Friday.

I remember when i was a child, elders don't allow us kids to went out of the house to play with the neighborhood kids. We were not even allowed to play outside during the Lenten holidays.

Holy Week in the Philippines is also a time to go back to one's roots and spend the holiday with loved ones whom they don't see everyday. I used to (working in Manila now) go home to IloIlo City to spend quality time with my family during Holy Week. IloIlo city is a beautiful place to visit - well known of it's historical tourist attractions and beaches - not to mention of it's neighboring City of Boracay.

Some people use the holiday to frolic at the beach or in a mountain getaway which is good for local tourism. Some just stayed home with their families, others said they went to go to Boracay to get a tan and a piñacoloda or abroad and make new friends.

Wherever and whatever we do, we should always remember that it is the death of our Lord and his triumphant resurrection.

The Health Benefits of Whole Wheat Bread

Making a commitment to eat whole-grains is an advanced healthy diet technique that has a lot in common with eating only organic produce. This commitment will add quality to your diet. Wheat bread is a good source of fiber, which can lower cholesterol and help keep you regular. Whole wheat bread is often recommended as a healthier alternative to white bread. However, do you know what the difference is?

Both white and whole wheat bread are made from wheat flour. Wheat berries used to make flour have three parts: the bran, the germ and the endosperm. White flour uses only the endosperm, while whole-wheat flour uses all the three parts, each of which contains nutrients essential for your health.

Whole wheat bread is much higher in fiber than white bread. Fiber aids digestion and most people are aware of this. However, fiber's benefits go beyond healthy digestion. Fiber helps you feel full and makes it easier for you to control your weight. Moreover, it has many health benefits. For example, fiber reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

How can you tell if bread is whole wheat or not? Read labels. Look for "Whole Grain" or "Whole Wheat". If bread is labeled “Wheat Bread”, this does not mean that you get more nutrients. Bread can be made with a combination of white and whole-wheat flour. You do need to read the label. Always consider that "good wheat bread" has a minimum of 3 grams of fiber,60 to 90 calories per slice, 100 percent whole grain (or wheat), and don't have caramel coloring in the ingredients.

HOW ABOUT THIS?

this is a forwarded email, long read but worth it i guess :)

ONE DAY, WHEN A SEAMSTRESS WAS SEWING WHILE SITTING CLOSE TO A RIVER, HER THIMBLE FELL INTO THE RIVER. WHEN SHE CRIED OUT, THE LORD APPEARED AND ASKED, "MY DEAR CHILD, WHY ARE YOU CRYING?" THE SEAMSTRESS REPLIED THAT HER THIMBLE HAD FALLEN INTO THE WATER AND THAT SHE NEEDED IT TO HELP HER HUSBAND IN MAKING A LIVING FOR THEIR FAMILY.

THE LORD DIPPED HIS HAND INTO THE WATER AND PULLED UP A GOLDEN THIMBLE SET WITH PEARLS. "IS THIS YOUR THIMBLE?" THE LORD ASKED. THE SEAMSTRESS REPLIED, "NO."

THE LORD AGAIN DIPPED INTO THE RIVER. HE HELD OUT A SILVER THIMBLE RINGED WITH SAPPHIRES. "IS THIS YOUR THIMBLE?" THE LORD ASKED. AGAIN, THE SEAMSTRESS REPLIED, "NO."

THE LORD REACHED DOWN AGAIN AND CAME UP WITH A LEATHER THIMBLE. "IS THIS YOUR THIMBLE?" THE LORD ASKED. THE SEAMSTRESS REPLIED, "YES."

THE LORD WAS PLEASED WITH THE WOMAN'S HONESTY AND GAVE HER ALL THREE THIMBLES TO KEEP, AND THE SEAMSTRESS WENT HOME HAPPY. SOME YEARS LATER, THE SEAMSTRESS WAS WALKING WITH HER HUSBAND ALONG THE RIVERBANK, AND HER HUSBAND FELL INTO THE RIVER AND DISAPPEARED UNDER THE WATER. WHEN SHE CRIED OUT, THE LORD AGAIN APPEARED AND ASKED HER, "WHY ARE YOU CRYING?"

"OH LORD, MY HUSBAND HAS FALLEN INTO THE RIVER!" THE LORD WENT DOWN INTO THE WATER AND CAME UP WITH RICHARD GERE. "IS THIS YOUR HUSBAND?" THE LORD ASKED.

"YES," CRIED THE SEAMSTRESS.

THE LORD WAS FURIOUS. "YOU LIED! THAT IS AN UNTRUTH!"

THE SEAMSTRESS REPLIED, "OH, FORGIVE ME, MY LORD. IT IS A MISUNDERSTANDING. YOU SEE, IF I HAD SAID 'NO' TO RICHARD GERE, YOU WOULD HAVE COME UP WITH MEL GIBSON. THEN IF I SAID 'NO' TO HIM, YOU WOULD HAVE COME UP WITH MY HUSBAND. HAD I THEN SAID 'YES,' YOU WOULD HAVE GIVEN ME ALL THREE. LORD, I'M NOT IN THE BEST OF HEALTH AND WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF ALL THREE HUSBANDS, SO THAT'S WHY I SAID 'YES' TO RICHARD GERE."

THE MORAL OF THIS STORY IS: - WHENEVER A WOMAN LIES,IT'S FOR A GOOD AND HONORABLE REASON, AND IN THE BEST INTEREST OF OTHERS. THAT'S OUR STORY, AND WE'RE STICKING TO IT.
